Archbishop Temple CofE High School Expansion

PROJECT Overview

About the Project

Located in the heart of Preston, Archbishop Temple Church of England High School occupies a Grade II listed building and currently accommodates 775 students. In response to increasing demand for secondary school places across Preston, Lancashire County Council identified the school as a suitable candidate for expansion. The project will increase the school’s capacity from 775 to 1,050 students, expanding from five-form entry to seven-form entry. The development includes the construction of a new two-storey extension that will provide a range of modern learning and support facilities, including a new accessible reception area and social space, dedicated performing arts facility, a new library, two IT classrooms and eight general teaching classrooms. The scheme also incorporates significant external works, including improvements to the bus turning area and enhancements to the main school access from St Vincent’s Road. Beyond the new accommodation, the additional space creates an opportunity to undertake a wider reorganisation of the campus. Existing areas of the school will be refurbished and reconfigured to better group teaching faculties, creating a more coherent, efficient and functional learning environment for both current and future students. Hive has provided project and commercial management services from the inception of the scheme, including the procurement of the design team and coordination throughout the design stages. Hive also led the procurement of the main contractor, with construction works scheduled to commence in Summer 2026.
